What
are the benefits of asphalt pavement?
It is safe, economical, and is the most long lasting and durable paving
material. Asphalt is 100% recyclable It is the material of choice on
roads in this country. Of the 2.27 million miles of paved roads, 94% are
surfaced with asphalt. Asphalt gives the best return of investment of
any paving material. Asphalt retains heat better so ice doesn't form
as quickly and melts faster. Asphalt is impervious to de-icing
salts and chemicals.
Are
asphalt pavements safe ?
Yes, as well as being an environmentally sound product. Asphalt is basically
an inert material, even in a water environment. Asphalt paving
materials have been used to line the surfaces of everything from fish
hatcheries to industrial retention ponds. For decades asphalt paving
materials have been used as liners for water reservoirs, and asphalt cement
has been used to line water pipes that supply potable water to humans.
How
thick should I pave?
It depends on the amount and weight of the traffic that will be on it.
Driveways that will have heavy traffic (such as septic services, garbage
trucks, etc.) should plan on a little thicker driveway than those who will
only see light traffic. An overlay on an existing drive may be as thin as 1
1/4" to multiple layer 8" thick parking lots and roads. Traffic is
the key concern. Feel free to contact our salesmen for information on your
project, or check out the Design Guide for
answers pertaining to your particular project.
I
am in the process of building a new home. Can you give me some pointers?
If you need a culvert, call your town/city building dept. to find out the
diameter they require. We would be happy to install it, as well as do the
primary excavation and placement of base stone to prepare your driveway for
paving later. Not all base stone is the same, specify road gravel or traffic
bond for your base. "Clear Stone" commonly used as base material
for concrete is not the best choice for an asphalt driveway. You have
options to choose from when it comes to the paving stage:
One single layer. (best if settling of utility trenches is not a concern) The least costly option for residential drives.
Two
layers. Pave the first layer before you move in so you don't track the
inside of your new house full of the outside. Add the second layer when
you have the landscaping done and your convinced that settling has
stopped. Contact Us for help and a free
estimate.
Can you overlay my existing
drive?
Most driveways and parking lots are candidates for overlay, but there are
many options available. If you would refer to the overlay section of our
website under Services/Asphalt Paving/Overlays.
What are
some tips of maintaining an Asphalt surface?
Never turn the wheel of your car in one spot while car is not moving this will produce groves in the asphalt.
Avoid parking your car in the same spot on your new asphalt for 2-3 weeks this is very important in hot weather.
We recommend that you keep your car off asphalt for 2 days or longer during the hot weather. (You need to speak to the installer at time of service for a thorough recommendation)
Always be careful when using gas or oil products near asphalt. If a spill occurs use water to wash to prevent major staining.
To prevent damage never park a recreational vehicle i.e. motorcycle, boat trailer or motor home without support. (i.e. piece of plywood)
